nursery closure equality impact assessment

Communications and Mitigation

Glasgow College of Nautical Studies

Background

Glasgow College of Nautical Studies (which has since merged with other regional colleges and is part of City of Glasgow College) proposed closing down its nursery, which provided early years care for children of staff and students.

We were asked to advise on strategy and communications.

Approach

Parents and carers who used the nursery were predominantly female, as were the staff who worked there. It was necessary to demonstrate in the equality impact assessment that any closure would be a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim.

Process

We gathered data about people who would be affected by the closure and produced an equality impact assessment setting out how the College could mitigate negative impact, including signposting users to alternative services, waiving termination fees and redeployment of nursery staff.
