Equality Review of Sport Standards

Sport Scotland

Background

The Equality Standard for Sport is owned by the 5 Sports Councils through the Sports Councils Equality Group (SCEG). The Standard is a framework for assisting Governing Bodies of sport to widen access and reduce inequalities in sport and physical activity from underrepresented individuals, groups and communities. It is based around two broad themes: developing your organisation and developing your services and has four levels of achievement.

Sport Scotland commissioned us to review the Equality Standard for the SCEG.

Approach

A focus of this work was proportionality and realism. Large sports governing bodies will have greater resources to assist them in meeting the Standard whereas smaller community sports clubs are less likely to employ staff, and are often run purely by volunteers.

Process

The existing Equality Standard was tested from the perspectives of different types of clubs. We also engaged with stakeholders to include their experience. Our review included promoting existing resources to assist clubs in meeting the Equality Standard.
